## Biography

George S. Barnes, A.S.C., was an American cinematographer active from the silent era to the early 1950s. Born in Pasadena, California, he began his career as a still photographer for Thomas H. Ince in 1918 and went on to work at major studios including Paramount, United Artists, Warner Bros. and RKO.

He received eight Academy Award nominations for cinematography and won once, for his work on Alfred Hitchcock's *Rebecca* (1940). Among his other credits are *Spellbound* (1945), *Jane Eyre* (1943), *The Bells of St. Mary's* (1945), *Samson and Delilah* (1949), *Meet John Doe* (1941) and *The War of the Worlds* (1953). He was married to actress Joan Blondell from 1933 to 1936; their son Norman S. Powell became a television executive.
