## Biography

George Bernard Shaw was an Irish playwright, critic and political activist. Born in Dublin in 1856, he moved to London in the 1870s and became a leading dramatist of his generation, writing more than sixty plays.

Shaw adapted his 1913 play *Pygmalion* for the screen in 1938, sharing the Academy Award for Best Adapted Screenplay. He also wrote the screenplays for *Major Barbara* (1941) and *Caesar and Cleopatra* (1945). His work *Pygmalion* later formed the basis for the musical *My Fair Lady*. He received the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1925 and died in 1950.
