George Denis Patrick Carlin (12 May 1937 – 22 June 2008) was an American stand-up comedian, actor and author. He began his career in the 1950s and became known for observational and satirical routines on language, religion and politics.

Carlin appeared in films including *Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure* (1989) and *Bill & Ted's Bogus Journey* (1991) as Rufus, *Dogma* (1999) as Cardinal Glick, *Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back* (2001) and *Jersey Girl* (2004). He also provided voice work for *The Simpsons* and *Cars* (2006).

He hosted the first episode of *Saturday Night Live* in 1975 and released fourteen HBO stand-up specials. Carlin received five Grammy Awards for comedy albums and was awarded the Mark Twain Prize for American Humor in 2008.
