## Biography

George Dreyfus is an Australian composer of contemporary classical music, film and television scores. Born on 22 July 1928 in Elberfeld (now part of Wuppertal), Germany, he fled Nazi persecution with his family and settled in Australia in 1939.

He studied bassoon and played in the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra from 1953 before focusing on composition from the mid-1960s. His film and television credits include *The Adventures of Sebastian the Fox* (1963), *Dimboola* (1979) and *Tender Mercies* (1983). He received the Australia Council's Don Banks Fellowship in 1991 and was appointed a Member of the Order of Australia in 1992 for services to music.
