## Biography

George James Hopkins (23 March 1896 – 11 February 1985) was an American set designer, art director and production designer. A native of Pasadena, California, he studied design at college and began his career designing scenery for the stage. He moved into films in 1917, working initially as an art director, and later became a prolific set decorator, particularly at Warner Bros.

Hopkins received thirteen Academy Award nominations for art direction or set decoration and won four: for *A Streetcar Named Desire* (1951), *My Fair Lady* (1964), *Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf?* (1966) and *Hello, Dolly!* (1969). He contributed set decoration to numerous notable films, including *Casablanca* (1942), *East of Eden* (1955), *Strangers on a Train* (1951) and *Dial M for Murder* (1954). His mother, Una Nixson Hopkins, had also worked as an art director on silent films.
