## Fi1m on George MacKay

> George MacKay is persuasive as men trying hard not to show how frightened they are. We rate the watchfulness and the physical detail; even when the writing is thin, he gives us someone worth following.

In *Femme* (2023), George MacKay’s Preston circles Jules outside a shop, needling him for the benefit of his friends. We were horrified by the wait before the violence, because MacKay makes that need to impress the others so plain. James Rhodes shoots the pavement in the shop’s flat white light and keeps the camera at a distance, making us uncomfortable witnesses. His growl and his posture are choices Preston has made; when he is alone with Jules, the voice lifts and the shoulders drop.

After wider recognition in *Captain Fantastic* (2016) came an international breakthrough with Sam Mendes’s *1917* (2019). As Lance Corporal Schofield, MacKay makes the constant movement feel like effort, with a watchfulness that keeps us concerned for the soldier. Dean-Charles Chapman’s more openly emotional Blake helps, and their performances make the thin characterisation easier to forgive. The camera’s movement can still be more absorbing than the men it follows.

MacKay has followed that breakthrough towards independent and international work, including *Wolf* (2021) and Bertrand Bonello’s *The Beast* (2024). In the latter’s 1910 section, his French-speaking Louis is gentle, waiting to be told he is needed. Opposite Léa Seydoux, MacKay makes that wish clear without pressing for sympathy. The performances are persuasive, though they cannot justify the film’s excessive length.

Mark Jenkin gets particularly good work from him by letting him keep quiet in *Rose of Nevada* (2026). As Nick Dyer, one of two men taking berths on a returned Cornish fishing boat, he keeps his questions to himself. Jenkin holds on his face, and MacKay gives that stillness enough unease to reward the attention. The middle drifts, but MacKay and Callum Turner keep the two men worth watching.

Our reservations have more to do with the scripts. *Femme* asks Jules to make choices we cannot believe, and MacKay’s careful changes of voice and posture cannot fix them. We would like more scripts that give him as much to work with as he gives their characters. Start with *1917* for the watchfulness, or *Femme* if the opening is something you can take.
