## Biography

George Mathews (10 October 1911 – 7 November 1984) was an American actor. He began his stage career in the early 1930s after failing to secure a job with the US Post Office and went on to appear in numerous Broadway productions, including roles in The Eve of St. Mark and A Streetcar Named Desire.

On screen he was frequently cast as heavies or tough military types. His film credits include Williams in *The Man with the Golden Arm* (1955), John Shanssey in *Gunfight at the O.K. Corral* (1957), Spec Cauley in *Pat and Mike* (1952) and Sheriff Bull Harper in *The Last Wagon* (1956). He also appeared in television series such as *The Honeymooners*, *Alfred Hitchcock Presents* and *Perry Mason*.

Mathews was married to stage actress Mary Haynsworth from 1951 until his death.
