## Biography

George Mendonça was an American topiary gardener. He worked at Green Animals Topiary Garden in Portsmouth, Rhode Island, where he served as superintendent from 1950 to 1985, maintaining and developing the estate's collection of animal-shaped hedges and shrubs.

Mendonça appeared as himself in Errol Morris's 1997 documentary *Fast, Cheap & Out of Control*, in which he discussed his lifelong work shaping topiary figures. He was born on 29 December 1909 in Newport, Rhode Island, and died on 2 February 2011.
