## Biography

George Oppenheimer was an American screenwriter, playwright and drama critic. Born in New York City, he graduated from Williams College and studied playwriting at Harvard University under George Pierce Baker. He began in publishing as publicity manager for Alfred A. Knopf and co-founded Viking Press in 1925 before turning to writing for the stage.

Oppenheimer moved to Hollywood in 1933 and worked primarily at MGM as a screenwriter and script doctor. His credits include *Roman Scandals* (1933), *Libeled Lady* (1936), *A Day at the Races* (1937) and *Adventures of Don Juan* (1948). He received an Academy Award nomination for Best Original Screenplay for *The War Against Mrs. Hadley* (1942).

In 1955 he returned to New York as drama critic for Newsday, later becoming its Sunday critic and serving as president of the New York Drama Critics' Circle from 1969 to 1971. He died in New York City in 1977.
