## Biography

George Toles is a screenwriter and academic. Born in Buffalo, New York, he has collaborated extensively with Canadian director Guy Maddin since the early 1990s.

He co-wrote the screenplay for *Archangel* (1990) and contributed to later Maddin films including *The Saddest Music in the World* (2003), *Brand Upon the Brain!* (2007) and the dialogue for *My Winnipeg* (2008). Toles has also written stories and screenplays for other projects such as *Edison and Leo* (2008) and *Keyhole* (2011).

Toles is Distinguished Professor of Literature and Film at the University of Manitoba and the author of books on cinema including *A House Made of Light: Essays on the Art of Film*.
