## Biography

Gerald Verner (1897–1980) was a British writer of thrillers. Born John Robert Stuart Pringle in Streatham, London, he wrote more than 120 novels, many of which were translated into over 35 languages and adapted for radio, stage and film. He contributed stories to magazines including *The Thriller* and *Detective Weekly* in the 1930s, often under pseudonyms such as Donald Stuart, and later recycled material into novels for Wright & Brown.

Verner wrote stage plays, including adaptations of Peter Cheyney’s *The Urgent Hangman* as *Meet Mr. Callaghan* (1952) and Agatha Christie’s *Towards Zero* (1956). His screen credits include the screenplay for *Tread Softly* (1952) and the teleplay for the 1961 episode 'Double Danger' of the series *The Avengers*. His son Christopher Verner worked in special effects for film and television.
