## Fi1m on Geraldine Chaplin

> Geraldine Chaplin’s precise, economical acting makes her particularly valuable in an ensemble. We rate that work highly, but her work with Carlos Saura is a reason not to mistake the familiar supporting parts for the whole story.

Watch the discipline in Geraldine Chaplin’s movements, and how little she needs to do to make a supporting part count. Her classical ballet background helps explain the physical precision. We value her economy, particularly in ensembles where every actor might reasonably want a little more attention. It is an unshowy skill, and an easy one to underrate. But treating her solely as a supporting player leaves out too much of her work.

*Doctor Zhivago* (1965), directed by David Lean, gave her an international breakthrough as Tonya Gromeko. The important turn came with Carlos Saura: nine films between 1967 and 1979, including her central performance in *Cría Cuervos* (1976). Robert Altman’s *Nashville* (1975), in which she plays Opal, belongs to the same stretch. Her later appearances for Martin Scorsese and Pedro Almodóvar brought that experience to supporting roles, where economy remained a particular strength.

In *Talk to Her* (2002), directed by Pedro Almodóvar, Chaplin’s Katerina Bilova supplies important links in the story without making a supporting part feel overworked. That restraint is a good reason to seek her out, even when the central performances take most of the attention. We were moved by the friendship Javier Cámara and Darío Grandinetti build between two men caring for women in comas. We still think Almodóvar can be too forgiving of those men, a reservation that the quality of the acting cannot remove.

Martin Scorsese’s *The Age of Innocence* (1993), with Chaplin as Mrs. Welland, is another rewarding place to watch her at work. Its social rules make the romance painful, while Daniel Day-Lewis, Michelle Pfeiffer and Winona Ryder make the people beneath the finery matter. Scorsese sometimes explains the manners more patiently than necessary; even a fine ensemble cannot fix that. These are rewarding films in which to watch Chaplin, though neither should be asked to account for all she can do. For a central part, turn to *Cría Cuervos*.

## Biography

Geraldine Chaplin is an actress. Born on 31 July 1944 in Santa Monica, California, she is the daughter of Charlie Chaplin and Oona O'Neill. She made her screen debut as a child in her father's *Limelight* (1952) and came to prominence as Tonya in David Lean's *Doctor Zhivago* (1965).

Chaplin has worked in English-, Spanish- and French-language films. Her credits include *Nashville* (1975), *The Age of Innocence* (1993) as Mrs. Welland, *Talk to Her* (2002) and *Chaplin* (1992) as Hannah Chaplin. She had a long professional and personal relationship with director Carlos Saura, appearing in several of his films including *Cría cuervos* (1976). She married cinematographer Patricio Castilla in 2006.

She received Golden Globe nominations for *Doctor Zhivago*, *Nashville* and *Chaplin*, a BAFTA nomination for *Welcome to L.A.* (1976) and a Goya Award for *En la ciudad sin límites* (2002).
