## Biography

Gerard Carbonara was an American composer, conductor, opera coach and concert violinist. He received a scholarship to the National Conservatory of Music in New York and continued his studies at the Naples Conservatory. In 1910 he worked as an opera coach in Milan, later touring Europe and the United States as a violinist and conductor.

Carbonara began scoring films towards the end of the silent era. In the 1930s and 1940s he contributed music to numerous Paramount productions, often working with John Leipold. He composed several cues for *Stagecoach* (1939), though he received no screen credit owing to a contractual clause. Other credits include *Union Pacific* (1939), *Dr. Cyclops* (1940) and *The Shepherd of the Hills* (1941). He received an Academy Award nomination for his score for *The Kansan* (1943).

After the Second World War he composed and arranged music for short films. In addition to his film work, Carbonara wrote an opera, *Armand*, and numerous pieces for piano, violin and orchestra.
