## Biography

Gerard Soeteman (1 July 1936 – 16 May 2025) was a Dutch screenwriter. Born in Rotterdam, he began his career in television, writing the series *Floris* (1969).

He collaborated frequently with director Paul Verhoeven. Their joint credits include the screenplays for *Turkish Delight* (1973), *Soldier of Orange* (1977), *Spetters* (1980), *The 4th Man* (1983) and *Black Book* (2006). Soeteman also wrote the screenplay for *The Assault* (1986), which won the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film. In 2017 he received a Gouden Kalf award for his contribution to Dutch film culture.
