## Biography

Gert Fröbe was a German actor. Born Karl Gerhart Fröbe on 25 February 1913 in Oberplanitz (now part of Zwickau), Saxony, he trained as a stage painter at the Dresden State Theater and later studied acting. He worked in theatre before and after the Second World War and made his film debut in *Berliner Ballade* (1948).

Fröbe appeared in more than 100 films, predominantly in German productions. He gained international recognition for his role as Auric Goldfinger in the James Bond film *Goldfinger* (1964). Other notable credits include *The Longest Day* (1962), *Those Magnificent Men in Their Flying Machines* (1965), *Chitty Chitty Bang Bang* (1968) and *Ludwig* (1973). His English-language performances were often dubbed owing to his accent. He died on 5 September 1988 in Munich.
