## Biography

Geza Herczeg was a Hungarian-American playwright, screenwriter and journalist. Born in Nagykanizsa, he studied law and worked as a newspaper correspondent covering the Balkan Wars and the First World War, later serving as chief of the press department for the Hungarian Ministry of State.

He wrote for the stage, including the musical *Wonder Bar*, and moved into screenwriting in Hollywood. Herczeg shared the Academy Award for Best Adapted Screenplay with Heinz Herald and Norman Reilly Raine for *The Life of Emile Zola* (1937). His other film credits include *The Shanghai Gesture* (1941).

During the Second World War he worked with the US Office of War Information. He died in Rome in 1954.
