## Biography

Ghislain Cloquet (18 April 1924 – 2 November 1981) was a Belgian-born French cinematographer. Born in Antwerp, he studied at the École Nationale Supérieure Louis-Lumière and the Institut des hautes études cinématographiques (IDHEC) in Paris, graduating in 1947 and becoming a naturalised French citizen.

Cloquet worked extensively with Robert Bresson and collaborated with directors including Alain Resnais, Jacques Becker, Jacques Demy, Chris Marker and Roman Polanski. His credits include *Night and Fog* (1956), *Le Trou* (1960), *Au Hasard Balthazar* (1966), *The Young Girls of Rochefort* (1967), *Donkey Skin* (1970), *Love and Death* (1975) and *Tess* (1979), for which he shared an Academy Award for Best Cinematography. He also taught cinematography at IDHEC.

Cloquet married Sophie Becker, daughter of director Jacques Becker; Jean Becker and Étienne Becker were his brothers-in-law.
