## Biography

Gia Scala was a British-American actress. Born Josephine Grace Johanna Scoglio on 3 March 1934 in Liverpool, England, to a Sicilian father and an Irish mother, she moved to the United States as a teenager and studied acting in New York with Stella Adler and at the Actors Studio. She became a naturalised American citizen in 1958.

She appeared in films including an uncredited role in *All That Heaven Allows* (1955) and supporting parts in *Don't Go Near the Water* (1957), *The Tunnel of Love* (1958) and *Ride a Crooked Trail* (1958). Her best-known film role was as Anna in *The Guns of Navarone* (1961). She also guest-starred in television series such as *Alfred Hitchcock Presents* and *The Alfred Hitchcock Hour*.

Scala married actor Don Burnett in 1959; they divorced in 1970. She died on 30 April 1972 in Los Angeles, aged 38.
