## Biography

Gilbert Moses III (1942–1995) was an American stage, film and television director. Born in Cleveland, Ohio, he began acting as a child at Karamu House and studied at Oberlin College and the Sorbonne before leaving to join the civil rights movement. He co-founded the Free Southern Theater, a pioneering Black touring company, in 1963.

Moses made his Broadway debut directing *Ain't Supposed to Die a Natural Death* (1971), earning a Tony Award nomination and a Drama Desk Award. His off-Broadway work included Obie Award-winning productions of *Slave Ship* (1969) and *The Taking of Miss Janie* (1975). He directed episodes of the miniseries *Roots* (1977), as well as *Benson* and *Law & Order*, and the films *Willie Dynamite* (1974) and *The Fish That Saved Pittsburgh* (1979).

He received an Emmy nomination for his work on *Roots*. Moses was married three times, including to actress Denise Nicholas and singer Dee Dee Bridgewater.
