## Biography

Gile Steele was an American costume designer who worked primarily at Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer and later Paramount Pictures. His career began in 1938 at MGM, with early credits including *Marie Antoinette*.

He contributed to numerous prestige films, including *Pride and Prejudice* (1940), *Waterloo Bridge* (1940), *Mrs. Miniver* (1942), *The Heiress* (1949) and *Samson and Delilah* (1949). Steele received Academy Award nominations for *The Emperor Waltz* (1948) and posthumous nominations in 1951 and 1952; he won Oscars for Best Costume Design for *The Heiress* and *Samson and Delilah*.

He studied at the Chouinard Art Institute in Los Angeles around 1927.
