## Biography

Gilles Margaritis (1912–1965) was a French actor, director and television producer. Born in Paris, he began his film career in 1934 with small roles as a chauffeur in Robert Bresson's *Les Affaires publiques* and as the peddler in Jean Vigo's *L'Atalante*.

He had a background as a musical comedy performer on stage. In the 1950s he moved into television, creating, writing, directing and producing variety shows, most notably *La Piste aux étoiles*, which continued after his death. He was married to Hélène Margaritis.
