## Fi1m on Giorgio Cantarini

> In *Life Is Beautiful*, Giorgio Cantarini makes the child feel real while Roberto Benigni works hard to keep him entertained. We value that unforced presence, even when the film asks for more reassurance than we can accept.

Roberto Benigni’s Guido has to keep being funny for his son, and Giorgio Cantarini gives that effort a reason. As Giosué in *Life Is Beautiful* (1997), he makes the boy feel like someone to protect rather than a convenient reason for the audience to cry. His performance is unforced enough to make the father’s anxiety matter. We were moved by Guido’s struggle to hide his fear from the boy, because the effort to stay cheerful is allowed to show.

With Benigni directing and playing his father, Cantarini has a conspicuously busy partner. He does not need to compete with the clowning. Their scenes together give us something immediate to care about, even when the film’s larger choices are difficult to accept. The Holocaust setting is softened too much, and the affection these performances earn cannot make that convincing. We rate Cantarini’s contribution more highly than the film around him, without pretending he can repair its problems.

His next prominent film, Ridley Scott’s *Gladiator* (2000), gave him a cameo as Maximus’s son, a much smaller opportunity than Benigni had offered. The subsequent return to screen work included Giuseppe in *Il giorno la notte poi l’alba* (2007), followed much later by Giorgio Lamborghini in *Lamborghini: The Man Behind the Legend* (2022). The intervening career took in Italian features, shorts, television and theatre. His later naturalistic approach developed through formal acting training, though we would be cautious about treating greater technical preparation as proof of more persuasive acting.

Early recognition also narrowed his initial adult casting opportunities: some directors continued to see the child from *Life Is Beautiful*. That makes those two familiar early titles an incomplete guide to what he might offer another director. His adult work deserves to be judged role by role, without either nostalgia or a compensating rush to praise. Start with his scenes opposite Benigni, but keep our reservations about the film in mind.
