## Biography

Giuseppe De Santis (11 February 1917 – 16 May 1997) was an Italian film director and screenwriter. He was born in Fondi, Lazio, and began his career as a film critic before working as a screenwriter and assistant director.

In 1942 he collaborated on the screenplay for *Ossessione* (1943), directed by Luchino Visconti. He made his directorial debut with *Caccia tragica* (1947) and went on to direct *Riso amaro* (1949), *Roma ore 11* (1952) and *La strada lunga un anno* (1958). He was the brother of cinematographer Pasqualino De Santis and was married to Yugoslav actress Gordana Miletic.
