She is best known for her role as Jeanie Boulet, a physician assistant, on the medical drama series *ER* (1995–1999, with a return in 2008). The performance brought two Primetime Emmy Award nominations and Screen Actors Guild Awards for ensemble cast. She has appeared in films including *Timecop* (1994) and *Lincoln* (2012), in which she played Elizabeth Keckley.
