## Biography

Sir Godfrey Seymour Tearle (1884–1953) was a British actor. Born in New York City and brought up in Britain, he was the son of British actor and manager George Osmond Tearle and American actress Marianne Conway. He made his stage debut in 1893 and became a noted Shakespearean actor, appearing in title roles including Othello, Macbeth and Henry V.

Tearle appeared in films from 1908. He is known for his performances in *The 39 Steps* (1935) as Professor Jordan, *One of Our Aircraft Is Missing* (1942) as Sir George Corbett, and *The Titfield Thunderbolt* (1953) as the Bishop. He was knighted in 1951 for services to drama.
