## Biography

Gordon Avil (also credited as J. Gordon Avil or David Gordon Avil) was an American cinematographer. He began his career as an assistant camera operator on *Show People* (1928) and went on to serve as director of photography on films including *Hallelujah* (1929), *Billy the Kid* (1930) and *The Champ* (1931), all directed by King Vidor.

His later credits include *The Black Sleep* (1956), *Shield for Murder* (1954), *King Dinosaur* (1955) and *The Underwater City* (1962). He also worked extensively in television, notably as cinematographer on over 140 episodes of the series *Hogan's Heroes* (1965–1970). Avil died in Barbados in 1970 while on vacation from the show.
