## Biography

Gordon Mitchell, also known as Whitey Mitchell, was an American television writer and producer. Born in Hackensack, New Jersey, he began his career as a jazz bassist, performing and recording with artists including Benny Goodman, Ella Fitzgerald and Barbra Streisand before moving to Hollywood in the mid-1960s to write for television.

He contributed scripts to series including *Get Smart*, *The Mary Tyler Moore Show* (1970), *All in the Family* (from 1971), *The Jeffersons*, *The Odd Couple*, *Good Times*, *Mork & Mindy* and *Diff'rent Strokes*. He co-wrote the screenplay for the feature film *Private Resort* (1985). Mitchell also worked as a story editor and producer on several shows, later teaching screenwriting at UCLA and UC Riverside. In later life he hosted a radio show in Palm Desert, California, and wrote books on the Palm Springs Walk of Stars and his own career.
