In *The Room* (2003), Greg Sestero’s Mark cannot settle into a casual exchange without the dialogue making it sound like an exercise. Tommy Wiseau, playing Johnny, makes the effort of acting so visible that the performers around him struggle to establish any rhythm. Sestero and Juliette Danielle, as Lisa, have little room to make these people convincing. It is a poor basis for declaring Sestero a bad actor, though it gives us little reason to recommend the performance.

We grew tired of *The Room* because its repetition made already awkward conversations harder to sit through. There is occasional accidental comedy, and Wiseau’s sincerity keeps some passages interesting, but Sestero’s presence does not make the drama work. Even the small talk sounds laboured, leaving us conscious of the actors trying to get through lines that ought to pass unnoticed. Mark belongs to a love triangle that needs credible exchanges, and those are precisely what the film cannot manage.

His first lead had come in *Retro Puppet Master* (1999), as Andre Toulon, so Mark was not his first attempt to carry a film. On *The Room*, he also worked as a line producer and assistant, a wider involvement that helps explain why his subsequent work cannot be discussed through acting alone. *The Disaster Artist* (2013), written with Tom Bissell, turned the production into a memoir; a film adaptation followed in 2017. The book gives him a more useful task: describing the circumstances behind the awkwardness, with the space to be detailed and funny about the experience. Knowing how the film was made does not make Mark’s conversations any easier to believe.

Sestero wrote *Best F(r)iends: Volume 1* (2017) and played Jon Kortina alongside Wiseau. He was still working with Wiseau, but now supplying their dialogue. His move into directing came with the horror film *Miracle Valley* (2021), which he also wrote and appeared in. He attended Monte Vista High School in Danville before modelling in Milan and Paris during his junior year of high school for designers including Giorgio Armani and Gianfranco Ferré. He later studied acting at the American Conservatory Theater in San Francisco.

Sestero is best known for his role as Mark in the 2003 film *The Room*. He wrote the 2013 memoir *The Disaster Artist* about the making of the film, which was adapted into a 2017 feature directed by and starring James Franco. His other credits include uncredited roles in *Gattaca* (1997) and *Patch Adams* (1998), as well as the lead in *Retro Puppet Master* (1999). He has also appeared in television and later directed and produced his own projects.
