He was born on 10 April 1949 in San Diego, California, and graduated from UCLA with an MFA in 1976. His debut feature, *The Confessions of Amans* (1976), won the Best First Feature Award at the Chicago International Film Festival. Nava gained wider recognition with *El Norte* (1983), which he directed, wrote the story for and co-wrote the screenplay; the film received an Academy Award nomination for Best Original Screenplay. His other directing credits include *My Family* (1995), *Selena* (1997), *Why Do Fools Fall in Love* (1998) and *Bordertown* (2007). He also wrote the screenplay for *Frida* (2002). Three of his films have been selected for the National Film Registry.
