## Biography

Grete Berger (also credited as Greta Berger) was an Austrian-German stage and film actress. Born Margarethe Berg on 11 February 1883 in Jägerndorf, Moravia, Austria-Hungary (now Krnov, Czech Republic), she trained under acting teacher Rosa Roth in Vienna and made her stage debut in 1903 at the Deutsches Theater in Berlin. From 1904 she worked under Max Reinhardt, performing youthful character roles including Puck in *A Midsummer Night's Dream*.

Berger appeared in numerous silent films from 1913, notably as Countess Margit von Schwarzenberg in *The Student of Prague* (1913), the Mother in *Destiny* (1921), Fine in *Dr. Mabuse, the Gambler* (1922), the Pawnbroker in *Phantom* (1922), the Hun's woman in *Die Nibelungen: Siegfried* (1924), and an uncredited Working Woman in *Metropolis* (1927). Her film career ended with the rise of the Nazi Party in 1933. She was murdered at Auschwitz concentration camp on 23 May 1944.
