## Biography

Gunnar Sjöberg (25 March 1909 – 8 June 1977) was a Swedish actor. He trained at the Royal Dramatic Theatre's acting school in Stockholm from 1931 to 1934 and began his career in theatre, appearing at venues including Helsingborgs stadsteater and Göteborgs stadsteater before working in film from the late 1930s.

He appeared in numerous Swedish films, often in authoritative roles such as doctors, priests and officials. Sjöberg is known for his performances in Ingmar Bergman films, including as Sten Alman (and the Examiner) in *Wild Strawberries* (1957), Dr Nordlander in *Brink of Life* (1958) and the Marquis Giuseppe Maria de Macopanza in *The Devil's Eye* (1960). He also featured in earlier works such as *A Woman's Face* (1938).

Sjöberg was married to actress Ingrid Envall. He served as chairman of the Swedish Actors' Union (Teaterförbundet) from 1957 to 1961.
