## Biography

Gus Kahn was an American lyricist. Born Gustav Gerson Kahn in 1886 in Germany, he emigrated to Chicago as a child. He began his career writing for vaudeville and Tin Pan Alley before contributing to Broadway shows.

From 1933 he worked extensively in film, providing lyrics for titles including *Flying Down to Rio* (1933), *The Merry Widow* (1934), *A Day at the Races* (1937) and *Love Me or Leave Me* (1955). His work on the title song and thematic music for *One Night of Love* (1934) earned an Academy Award for Best Original Score.

Kahn died in Beverly Hills, California, in 1941.
