## Fi1m on Gus Van Sant

> Gus Van Sant is a patient director of outsiders who makes room for awkwardness and humour. We recommend him for his handling of actors, with reservations about how much he sometimes leaves unexplained.

In *Good Will Hunting* (1997), the speeches are polished, but the people delivering them can still be awkward and funny. Gus Van Sant gives Matt Damon and Robin Williams time to make a young man's difficulty accepting help matter. We were moved by that struggle because the performances make accepting kindness seem difficult, rather than simply overdue. This is the accessible Van Sant, and we would not dismiss him for wanting to send us home happier.

Damon and Ben Affleck's script sometimes prepares its reassurance so thoroughly that a difficult conversation seems settled before it begins. Van Sant's actors supply enough humour to keep that from flattening the film. In the scenes between Damon and Driver, the attraction feels convincing while their uncertainty about what to do with it remains. We believe the people even when we wish they had been given a few less practised words.

*Drugstore Cowboy* (1989) and *My Own Private Idaho* (1991) established his reputation for outsider stories. The latter mixed naturalistic drama with Shakespeare and experimental elements; the move into studio films, including *To Die For* (1995), did not settle him into one way of working. After *Good Will Hunting* came the long-take experiments of *Gerry* (2002), *Elephant* (2003) and *Last Days* (2005). His recurring collaborators include cinematographer Harris Savides, and those experimental films favour choreographed shots and a slow pace. The same willingness to wait that helps an actor can become demanding when a film offers little plot or psychological explanation.

*Dead Man's Wire* (2026) returns to more direct suspense, with Bill Skarsgård giving us the strongest reason to watch. Tony Kiritsis wires a shotgun's trigger to his own neck while holding his mortgage broker hostage, and Van Sant makes their enforced closeness tight, funny and unpleasant. He trusts us to recognise the grievance against a financial institution without a lecture, but leaves Kiritsis too little examined. We wanted him to decide whether this man is a folk hero or a dangerous fool, or show why neither description will do. Watch it for Skarsgård and the tension, provided a tight siege is enough for the evening.

## Biography

Gus Van Sant is an American film director, screenwriter, producer, photographer, painter and musician. Born on 24 July 1952 in Louisville, Kentucky, he studied at the Rhode Island School of Design and began his career with short films before directing features from the mid-1980s.

He is known for independent films including *Mala Noche* (1985), *Drugstore Cowboy* (1989) and *My Own Private Idaho* (1991), as well as mainstream works such as *To Die For* (1995), *Good Will Hunting* (1997), *Finding Forrester* (2000), *Elephant* (2003) and *Milk* (2008). Van Sant received Academy Award nominations for directing the latter two films and won the Palme d'Or at Cannes for *Elephant*. His more recent credits include *Don't Worry, He Won't Get Far on Foot* (2018) and *Dead Man's Wire* (2026).
