He began his career as a stage actor in Off-Broadway and Broadway productions in the 1970s and has appeared in more than 150 stage and screen roles since the late 1970s. Boyd is known for character parts in film and television. He shared the Volpi Cup for Best Actor at the 1983 Venice Film Festival for his role in Robert Altman's *Streamers*.
