Born on 10 December 1962 in New York City, she began her career in the late 1980s as an assistant director on feature films including *Pacific Heights*, *The Doors*, *Raising Cain*, *I Love Trouble* and *Homeward Bound II: Lost in San Francisco*.

She made her television directorial debut on the FX series *The Shield*, where she had worked as a first assistant director. Subsequent credits include episodes of *Battlestar Galactica* (2009), *Criminal Minds*, *Sons of Anarchy*, *The Walking Dead*, *Fringe*, *American Horror Story*, *9-1-1* and *9-1-1: Lone Star*.

Horder-Payton is the granddaughter of actor Victor McLaglen and the niece of director Andrew V. McLaglen.
