## Biography

Gyula Hernádi was a Hungarian writer and screenwriter. Born in Oroszvár (now Rusovce, Slovakia) in 1926, he began publishing poetry and short stories in the mid-1950s before turning to screenwriting.

He is best known for his long collaboration with director Miklós Jancsó, writing or co-writing the screenplays for *The Round-Up* (1966), *The Red and the White* (1967), *Red Psalm* (1972), *Adoption* (1975) and many others. He also wrote novels and plays, and worked as a dramaturg at several Hungarian theatres.

Hernádi received the József Attila Prize in 1976 and the Kossuth Prize in 1999. He died in Budapest in 2005.
