## Biography

Harold Marsh Harwood (29 March 1874 – 19 April 1959) was a British playwright, screenwriter, theatre manager and businessman. He was educated at Marlborough College and Trinity College, Cambridge, and qualified as a doctor before joining the family cotton-spinning firm in Bolton.

Harwood wrote numerous plays, several of which were produced in the West End and on Broadway, including *The Pelican* (co-written with his wife F. Tennyson Jesse), *Cynara* and *The Man in Possession*. He managed the Ambassadors Theatre in London from 1919 to 1932. His screenwriting credits include the screenplay for *Queen Christina* (1933), co-written with Salka Viertel, and *Personal Property* (1937), adapted from his own play.
