## Fi1m on Hadar Ratzon Rotem

> Hadar Ratzon Rotem can be hurt without saying so, which is rarer than it sounds. The trouble is that writers have noticed, and keep handing her the same quiet, waiting women, Mossad agents and spies' wives, with nothing to do but hold still.

In *The Spy* (2019) Hadar Ratzon Rotem spends six episodes being left behind. Her Nadia Cohen takes the children to the school gate in the same two cardigans while her husband, in Damascus, is dressed in a sharper suit for every lie, and the series cuts from his dawn transmissions to the listening room in Tel Aviv far more often than it cuts to her. She is given one note, waiting, and asked to hold it for the whole run. What is worth noticing is how well she holds it: patient, hurt, and never handed a speech to say so. It is harder than it looks.

She came to it late. Ratzon Rotem graduated from the Yoram Loewenstein studio in Tel Aviv at 28, and within a year had a part in *Rendition* (2007). The role that got her noticed came in the second season of *Prisoners of War* (2012), Gideon Raff's series, and Raff has kept hiring her since, on *Tyrant* and then on *The Spy*. In between, *Homeland* cast her as a Mossad agent, Tova Rivlin, across two seasons. The pattern is plain enough that she has named it herself, saying she had never got to play "a regular role, a regular Tel Aviv woman."

We felt for Nadia from the first episode of *The Spy*, and by the fourth we had started to feel for the actor instead, which is not what a series wants. Itai Ne'eman shoots Israel drained to grey and Damascus in amber, so she is always in the colder half of the picture, and the writing by Raff and Max Perry gives the thinking to Alexander Siddig's security chief and leaves her at the gate. Ratzon Rotem does what can be done with that. The hurt reads without being spoken, and she never once asks for our sympathy, which is why we gave it.

Since then the work has moved closer to home. *The Echo of Your Voice* (2021) gave her the ordinary Tel Aviv woman she had wanted; *Line in the Sand* (2021) and *Jaffa* (2025) followed, along with an ensemble film, *Five and a Half Love Stories in a Vilnius Apartment* (2023). We have not reviewed any of them, so we will not pretend to judge them. On the evidence of *The Spy* she can carry a scene with nothing in it. We would like to see what she does with one that has something.
