## Fi1m on Haing S. Ngor

> Haing S. Ngor makes fear credible without underlining it. His Dith Pran in *The Killing Fields* remains the reason to seek him out: a restrained performance that makes the film’s more insistent writing and music feel unnecessary.

In *The Killing Fields* (1984), Haing S. Ngor’s Dith Pran is frightened, and we believe him without needing the dialogue to explain it. He gives us time to attend to Pran without constantly asking us to notice the effort of playing him. We were moved by the restraint with which Ngor plays his fear, particularly when the music was trying too hard to move us. He is the strongest reason to watch Roland Joffé’s film, which is harrowing and worth the ordeal despite its bouts of overstatement.

Ngor came to that part with no previous acting experience. It would be easy to treat this as an explanation of the performance, but inexperience is no guarantee of such directness. His subsequent work was largely in supporting film and television roles, continuing through the mid-1990s. *Eastern Condors* (1987), a Hong Kong action film, took him beyond the survivor parts with which he was associated. Later roles included Papa in Oliver Stone’s *Heaven & Earth* (1993) and the spiritual healer Mr. Ho in *My Life* (1993).

The acting around him in *The Killing Fields* helps explain why his restraint matters. Sam Waterston’s Schanberg is sincere, but his earnestness sometimes comes too close to Bruce Robinson’s emphatic writing. Robinson labours the friendship without always making the bond between the men convincing enough to sustain that attention. Ngor cannot put this right on his own. We can believe Pran completely and still question how much the film has earned its emphasis on the friendship.

Mike Oldfield’s music creates a similar problem, bearing down on distress Ngor has already made plain. When Joffé trusts his actors and the camera, Ngor needs little help making us understand what Pran feels; the score’s insistence becomes a distraction. These flaws matter, but they are not reasons to miss his performance. Begin with *The Killing Fields*, but do not choose it as a way to unwind.

## Biography

Haing S. Ngor was a Cambodian-born American physician and actor. Born on 22 March 1940 in Samrong Yong, then part of French Indochina, he trained and worked as a gynaecologist and obstetrician in Phnom Penh before the Khmer Rouge takeover in 1975. He survived the Cambodian genocide, during which he concealed his profession and education, and escaped to Thailand before immigrating to the United States as a refugee in 1980.

Ngor made his acting debut as Dith Pran in the 1984 film *The Killing Fields*, for which he won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor. He had no prior acting experience. He later appeared in films including *Eastern Condors* (1987), *Heaven & Earth* (1993) and *My Life* (1993), as well as television series such as *Miami Vice*. He remained active in humanitarian work supporting Cambodian refugees and advocating for justice for victims of the Khmer Rouge regime.

Ngor was shot and killed outside his home in Los Angeles on 25 February 1996 during a robbery. Three members of a local street gang were convicted of the murder in 1998.
