## Biography

Halliwell Hobbes (16 November 1877 – 20 February 1962) was an English actor. Born in Stratford-upon-Avon, Warwickshire, he made his stage debut in 1898 with Frank Benson's company, playing in Shakespearean repertory. He worked as an actor and director in the United States from 1906 before moving to Hollywood in 1929.

In films he specialised in character roles such as butlers, clerics, lords and diplomats. He appeared in over 100 films by 1949, including *Lady for a Day* (1933) as a butler, *Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde* (1931), *You Can't Take It with You* (1938), *To Be or Not to Be* (1942) and *Gaslight* (1944). He returned to Broadway in the mid-1940s, playing Lord Capulet in *Romeo and Juliet*, and continued stage work until 1955. From 1950 he also worked in American television. A heart ailment led to his retirement in 1956.
