## Biography

Hans Ertl (21 February 1908 – 23 October 2000) was a German cinematographer, director and writer. He began his career as an assistant to Arnold Fanck on mountain films and invented an underwater camera and a ski-mountable camera rig.

Ertl served as a cameraman on Leni Riefenstahl’s *Olympia* (1938), contributing to both parts of the film. During the Second World War he worked as a war correspondent. After the war he directed and wrote expedition documentaries including *Nanga Parbat 1953* (1953) and *Vorstoß nach Paititi* (1956). He died in Bolivia.
