He made his screen debut as Alan in *The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari* (1920). Other early German credits include *Genuine: The Tragedy of a Vampire* (1920) as Florian and *Phantom* (1922). In Hollywood he appeared in supporting roles, often uncredited, as German officers or Nazis in films including *Casablanca* (1943), *Hangmen Also Die!* (1943) as Reinhard Heydrich, *The Scarlet Empress* (1934) and *Passage to Marseille* (1944). He also worked in theatre in the United States and published a collection of poetic parodies, *Der rasende Pegasus*, in 1918.
