## Biography

Hans Janowitz (2 December 1890 – 25 May 1954) was a German author and screenwriter. Born in Poděbrady, Austria-Hungary (now in the Czech Republic), he served as an officer in the Austrian army during the First World War and returned as a pacifist. After the war he met Carl Mayer in Berlin, and the two wrote the screenplay for the 1920 film *The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari*, directed by Robert Wiene.

Janowitz contributed to several other silent films, including *Der Januskopf* (1920) and *Ewiger Strom* (1920). He later worked as a writer and translator, publishing novels such as *Jazz* (1927) and volumes of poetry. In 1939 he emigrated to the United States, where he established a perfume manufacturing company in New York; he died there in 1954.
