## Biography

Hans Karl Gottschalk (22 November 1891 – 27 May 1941) was a German cinematographer. He began working in film in 1915 as a still photographer before becoming an assistant cameraman and, after the First World War, a chief cinematographer on numerous silent films.

His credits include *Der Sonderling* (1929) and *Der weiße Rausch* (1931). He was one of the cinematographers on Leni Riefenstahl’s *Triumph des Willens* (1935) and the two-part *Olympia* (1938). With the outbreak of the Second World War he joined the German navy and was among those lost when the battleship *Bismarck* was sunk in the North Atlantic.
