## Fi1m on Harriet Walter

> Harriet Walter is particularly good at playing women who expect to be obeyed, with a precise delivery that leaves little room for sentiment. We admire that restraint, though her familiar authority can make the casting predictable.

Harriet Walter often appears on screen as a woman accustomed to being obeyed. Her precise, unsentimental delivery suits the aristocratic women and detached mothers she is so often asked to play. We find that coolness persuasive in supporting parts, where there may be little time to establish who holds power. The risk is that we know to expect disapproval before the character has said much.

Ang Lee’s *Sense and Sensibility* (1995) gave her an early prominent film role as Fanny Dashwood. It remains a film we recommend warmly for its funny, sharply judged performances, even when the surroundings look too comfortable for the characters’ difficulties. We were moved by it because Emma Thompson and Kate Winslet keep those feelings awkward and recognisable. Walter’s Fanny is part of an ensemble worth watching closely, without being the principal reason to recommend it.

In Joe Wright’s *Atonement* (2007), she plays Emily Tallis, another supporting part in a period drama. Her delivery is precise and unsentimental, qualities well suited to a film in which a glance can do real harm. We rate the acting highly; the war scenes are less consistently persuasive, sometimes making us notice the effort behind them. Walter’s restraint belongs to the side of the film we value most, where the people hold our attention without the production having to insist.

The stage work gives some reason to question how narrowly she is sometimes cast on screen. With the Royal Shakespeare Company, Walter played many Shakespearean women; in Phyllida Lloyd’s all-female Shakespeare productions in the 2010s, she also took on male roles. Her screen casting cannot tell us everything about what she can do. We would welcome more variety in the parts offered to her, without dismissing the skill she brings to familiar material.

Her recurring role as Lady Caroline Collingwood in *Succession* (2018–23) brought greater international prominence. It also continued the familiar casting of Walter as a cool, imperious mother. We welcome the prominence without wanting that pattern to become compulsory: precise acting deserves more than an endless supply of similar assignments. We would start with *Sense and Sensibility*, and keep an eye out for roles that ask her to be something other than forbidding.

## Biography

Dame Harriet Mary Walter DBE is an English actress. Born in London in 1950, she trained at the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art after being rejected by several other drama schools. She began her career in 1974 and has worked extensively in theatre, film and television.

Walter is known for her stage work with the Royal Shakespeare Company, including productions of *Twelfth Night* (1987–88) and *Three Sisters* (1988), for which she won the Laurence Olivier Award for Best Actress in a Revival. She received an Evening Standard Award for *Mary Stuart* (2005) and a Tony Award nomination for the Broadway transfer (2009). Other notable stage roles include an all-female Shakespeare trilogy in 2016.

Her film credits include *Sense and Sensibility* (1995) as Fanny Ferrars Dashwood, *Atonement* (2007), *Star Wars: The Force Awakens* (2015), *Rocketman* (2019) and *The Last Duel* (2021). On television she has appeared in *The Crown* (2016), *Ted Lasso* (2020–), *Succession* and *Silo* (2023–). In 2011 she was appointed Dame Commander of the Order of the British Empire for services to drama.
