## Fi1m on Harry Bradbeer

> Harry Bradbeer puts actors first, looking for pain beneath comedy and keeping genre stories close to their characters. We value his patience with performers, though the series around them can be thinner than their work deserves.

Harry Bradbeer often ends a scene on a face, trusting an actor to hold our attention rather than hurrying elsewhere. That preference for credible behaviour is a good starting point for *This Life* (1996), and the reason we are inclined to rate his work. The programme makes early professional life funny and affecting, though its opening is a little over-arranged. We were moved by Daniela Nardini and Jack Davenport because they made that untidy stage of life matter to us. The qualification is that this is an ensemble achievement, and praising Bradbeer should not mean forgetting the actors who make it work.

From *This Life*, his television work took him to the lead director's role on *The Cops* (1998), then to eleven of the twelve episodes of *Fleabag* (2016–2019). *Killing Eve* (2018), created by his collaborator Phoebe Waller-Bridge, had him directing its first two episodes. His account of their working relationship is useful: he concentrates on story structure, she on character. Then came *Enola Holmes* (2020), adapting Nancy Springer's novels with Millie Bobby Brown, and *Enola Holmes 2* (2022), which also gave him a story credit. Across comedy, thrillers and adventure, he looks for vulnerability and leaves room for performers' instincts.

*Spider-Noir* (2026) supplies a useful caution: Nicolas Cage as a down-at-heel 1930s private eye is a persuasive reason to watch, but the series around him is less satisfying. Bradbeer directed the first two episodes, so the eight-part programme's excess length cannot fairly be laid entirely at his door. Still, the limitation matters for a director so attentive to actors: Cage holds our interest without supplying everything this handsome, slightly hollow noir pastiche needs. We wanted six episodes rather than eight, and more to occupy us beyond its leading man. Go to *Spider-Noir* for Cage, with some patience for everything arranged around him.
