We value his plain, unshowy presence, even when a film such as *Dirty Harry* gives him too little to do. In *Dirty Harry* (1971), Harry Guardino’s Bressler is the superior who has to put up with Clint Eastwood’s Callahan. He makes the mixture of loyalty and frustration convincing, without suggesting that every exchange needs to become a contest for our attention. We felt a small relief when the film made room for him, because his comparatively ordinary presence gave us a break from Eastwood’s severity. It is useful, unshowy acting in a thriller we recommend with reservations. His earlier supporting work allowed more variation. In *Houseboat* (1958), he played the Italian handyman Angelo Donatello, bringing comic timing to the Cary Grant–Sophia Loren comedy. Barabbas in *King of Kings* (1961) made use of his physical intensity. By the 1970s, police and other authority figures were recurring assignments, suited to his brash New York delivery and worried look. The casting made sense, but it could also reduce the number of things a script asked him to do. Director Don Siegel worked with Guardino on three films, and *Dirty Harry* makes both the value and the limits of that supporting presence clear. Alongside Reni Santoni’s Chico, Bressler supplies welcome company in a film that keeps turning back to Harry. The screenplay seldom lets either colleague become as interesting as the trouble its central character can cause. He reprised Bressler in *The Enforcer* (1976), but the police roles were never the whole of his work. On stage, he played Sam Craig opposite Lauren Bacall in the Broadway musical *Woman of the Year* (1981).
