## Fi1m on Harry Hill

> Harry Hill's trick is to watch something ordinary with great care and report back as if it were mad. On *TV Burp* that was enough for a decade; nothing he has made since has held it as tightly.

A man in a white collar the size of a dinner plate stands in front of a clip from a soap. Somebody in the clip says a line that was fine on Tuesday and is not fine now. Hill plays it, blinks, plays it again, and by the third time the audience is laughing before the actor opens his mouth. That is the whole of *Harry Hill's TV Burp*, and it is nearly the whole of Harry Hill: a man who looks at an ordinary thing until it gives up and admits it is strange.

He arrived as a cult. *Harry Hill's Fruit Corner* on the radio from 1993 and *The Harry Hill Show* on television from 1997 ran on puppets, songs, a badger parade, Al Murray as Alan Hill and Burt Kwouk in recurring parts. It was built for people who already liked it. Then in 2002 he moved to the mainstream, with twenty-three minutes and a week of television, and he made the same kind of jokes for a far larger audience for ten years, and narrated *You've Been Framed* for eighteen on top. By his own account the soaps were the way in: people who would not have sat through a badger would sit through a joke about *EastEnders*.

What made *TV Burp* good was not the format but the choosing. Hill and a writers' room including Paul Hawksbee, David Quantick, Brenda Gilhooly, Daniel Maier and Dave Thompson watched everything, and picked the small things over the obvious ones: a reaction shot held a beat too long, a kitchen that had not changed in a decade. Steve Brown, who has written his music ever since, did the songs. We laughed until we had to pause an episode, at one soap line played four times with a different face from Hill in between, and felt slightly ashamed, because the actor had only been doing his job. Hill plainly watches these programmes with something close to affection, and the mockery lands harder for it.

Since the show ended in 2012 he has been looking for another thing to stare at, and the reviews say he has not found it. *The Harry Hill Movie* (2013) and the musical *I Can't Sing* (2014), both with Brown, were called uneven and unsure whether they were mocking their subjects or celebrating them; a *Stars in Their Eyes* revival, *Alien Fun Capsule* (2017–2019) and *Junior Bake Off* since 2019 have kept him on screen, and most critics think none of them has the density of the old Saturday nights. We have no quarrel with that. What has not slipped is the persona: the collar, the cuffs, the blink, and the hour of pacing he says he needs before he puts them on.

He is at his best when someone else has made the programme. Give him a week of other people's television and the right writers, and he is still one of the few British comics who can make a mainstream audience laugh at something properly odd.
