## Biography

Harry Horner (24 July 1910 – 5 December 1994) was a Czech-born American production designer and art director. Born in Holice, Bohemia (now in the Czech Republic), he studied architecture at the University of Vienna and began his career working with Max Reinhardt in Vienna before moving to the United States in the mid-1930s.

During the Second World War he served with the US Army Air Forces, designing sets for the production Winged Victory. He won Academy Awards for his work on The Heiress (1949, shared with John Meehan) and The Hustler (1961). Horner was also nominated for They Shoot Horses, Don't They? (1969). Other notable credits include A Double Life (1947), Born Yesterday (1950) and Separate Tables (1958). He directed a number of films and television episodes, including episodes of Gunsmoke, and retired after completing The Jazz Singer (1980). He was the father of composer James Horner.
