## Biography

Harry Ruby (1895–1974) was an American pianist, composer, songwriter and screenwriter. Born Harry Rubenstein in New York City, he began his career playing piano in vaudeville and working as a song plugger before forming a long-term songwriting partnership with Bert Kalmar in 1920.

Ruby and Kalmar contributed songs and screenplays to several films, including the Marx Brothers pictures *Animal Crackers* (1930), *Horse Feathers* (1932) and *Duck Soup* (1933). Ruby was inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 1970. He was married to silent-film actress Eileen Percy.
